Independent Hours

• What have I learned about myself through this experience?
I have learned that I am a very good worker. I also learned that I can get the job done when I am most interested in the work.

• Describe three moments of failure, success, indecision, doubt, humor, frustration, happiness, sadness?
While working in the shop I got a chance to meet a lot of new people.
• How will service learning change your future behaviors/attitudes/and career?
It wouldn't change my career. But my attitude towards life has changed.

Service Learning 5-28-08

This service learning meeting was okay. We went to the outside market but it was just strawberries and flowers there so we went to the Reading Terminal. We couldn't get any prices so thats the reason that we had to leave.
The object of the day was to complete a paper that explains how we will feed our children.

Service Learning

so far what I learned about my group is that I am in a group with a lot of people that have different ideas on how to make food in our school better. So far I learned about my group that nutrtiion is a big part of lunch and by kids not eating healthy alot of bad things can happen. I learned about myself is that when you are working in a group full of females that it sometimes you have to bite your tounge because I already have an attitude problem and I don't need to deal with anyone elses, so I learned about myself is how to control my attitutde and to treat people with the same respect that give me and ot could be good or bad. If I was in charge of the group I would take the whole group out for lunch at the same resturant and see how fast the service went. I would also talk to the principal about doing a petition on better lunches. My plan for May 15 would be to take a class poll to see how many kids in the school have money everyday. Secondly I would write up a letter stating my concerns on the food we get in this school. I looked at a blog on community giving. In this group its talkes about selling ice cream and water ice for children in the hospital, I think thats awesome. You can get water ice or ice cream if you bring in a book. You have to bring in a new or used book for ice cream and they figured this would be easier then them paying five dollars for a book when they can just challenge there peers.

Service Learning

In Fridays service learning group we talked with Mrs lynn about the problems that we have had with the selling of the foods and she said that she really didn't like how we did not give her a three day notice about us selling food near her because she could get in trouble for it. We also talked with Mrs Lynn about food services and she was able to tell us that we could petition and get children to get the school better lunches and one of my group members who is Katonya Leach drew a rough draft of a petition just to get started. We also talked about changing the service learning schedule or keeping it at 45mins or raising it to 90mins because the last service learning meetings there are a numerous amount of trips going on so they asked for our opinion on what we would rather have it be. Last we talked about a rubric where we had to evaluate ourselves and have it turned in by the next service learning meeting. These are all the things that we talked about within our service learning groups.

Theme Essay

The debate over the number and type of symbols in Of Mice And Men can go on for days. But today I'm bringing the farm to the table. This is symbolic because it could represent peace, the promise land, success, heaven, or even 40 acres and a mule.

To begin this, the farm could represent peace because they can go there and be uninterrupted by society. Peace which is a state of harmony or the absence of hostility is something that Lennie and George could have been trying to pursue their whole friendship.

40 acres and a mule is an essential symbol for this story. 40 acres and a mule was something promised to the slaves back in the day that only a few saw. Even though some slaves saw this, for the rest it was just an Mirage in the distance. George was working and looking after Lennie their whole friendship and I think the farm in George's mind was a prize visible but not obtainable because of Lennie's numerous foolish acts that he couldn't mentally control.

Success is something the pair was after which could definitely be an important symbol. Success which is an accomplishment of a purpose is something that relates solely to the farm. The farm which was their final destination would have symbolized success.

To wave the flag, the story has a variety of different symbol which could be expressed through a essay like this. If you read the book you might agree with me that peace, the promise land, success, heaven, or 40 acres an a mule are the top picks for symbols.

Motif Essay

Rudeness is the weak man's interpretation of strength. In the book Of Mice and Men Lennie was a very weak character but at the same time he was very strong. Some people picked on him but others just left him alone because of his retardation.

Even though he was retarded he accepted everyone as a friend even if they didn’t accept him. Crooks saw right through him and talked bad things about George, he instantly got mad. Lennie turned the tables and was about to fight Crooks so he told him there wasn't anything happen to George.

Lennie was retarded but was a very good worker. He could do twice the work of all of the other workers on the farm. He was a very strong man with a very bad disability.

He also couldn’t be very gentle with little things. He likes to pet little soft things then hurt them. He killed a puppy at the farm and before he came to the farm he used to kill mice.

As you can see Lennie was a very nice person but he was retarded. His one and only friend was George. Some of the farm workers despised him because he was such a great worker.

Essay

Everyone has a dream. Some dream big and some dream small. What is the American dream? Who knows, some people thinks money is the American dream and some think otherwise. In the book of mice and men all the characters are striving for one thing, a thing called the American dream. In this essay I will talk about the two important dreams that I think was accomplished through the story and the one I thought was the least accomplish in the story.

First lets talk about what everyone thinks is a dream, and that's fortune. None of the characters in the book was even close to fortune, except the boss and of course his son. The boss had fortune, and people working for him so all he had to do was sit back, relax, and collect money. Now on the other hand the others had nothing. They worked for a living, even though they were supplied with food and a place to stay, but I wouldn't say they were fortunate compared to the boss. Secondly, family should be the most important thing to you. Now don't get me wrong, some people are just blessed with a wonderful family who comfort them and look out for them the way they should, but then you have some people who don't get along with their family at all. In this book none of these characters had family that they could rely on. Three characters in the story who really grew into a great bond were Lennie, George, and Candy. When Candy's dog was killed they felt sorry for him. When Candy found out that George and Lennie was planning to buy a house, Candy wanted to leave with them, so he ask if he could go with them. I think the relationship that these three had was the closest that they would ever get to family.

Now that I expressed what I thought was important in this story,I want youto think about one question. Does family overpower fourtune?

Service Learning Planning 2

The next time our group goes out we plan on going to Aramark. this is a major food distribution company and they sponsor high school lunches. one of our team leaders set up a meeting with one of the managers to see what qualification we need for sponsoring incase were not able to go out for lunch next year. we also plan on getting Ms. Lynn help for next year so we will have the right supplies for better lunches next year. the ninth grade Math teacher Ms. D also have great ideas for our group, her sister works for a food company and we are planning to meet with her for sponsoring help.

Service Learning Planning

As an activity for this week our group went to various different food restaurants. on our trip we had to survey the fast food restaurant we ate at, the survey consisted of:

1. what was your restaurant?
Burger King

2. what kinds of food do they serve?
ham/cheese burgers, fries, sodas pies, chicken fries and chicken burgers

3. what was the highest thing on the menu?
steak house burger meal $7.99

4. What was the lowest thing on the menu?
ham burger .99

5. What would you rate this restaurant as?
5

this was a good experience for our group because it gave us the opportunity to check out different places to eat at for next year. it also showed how mature students could be and it put a good impression on our school.

Service Learning Reflection

The first group meeting for service learning was a little boring. I thought I was going to switch groups but I stayed and we made progress. thing with our group is we have a lot e of group leaders that are quiet and they can't control the group. sometimes this group really sucks and I don't want to be a part of it because I my ideas really don't count. The group leaders get to decide every thing we do within our group and it's so irking because no one else gets a say in what we do.

Service Learning Idea

SEND A GET WELL SOON CARD TO A HOSPITALIZED CHILD

Get Well Soon Cards help hospitalized children feel less isolated and lonely.

When a seriously ill child remains hospitalized for months, family visits can become less frequent, particularly when the child is transferred to a specialized hospital far from the parents' home. These parents may have other children to care for, and jobs they must keep to maintain medical insurance or to pay uncovered medical bills.

As a result, children requiring long-term care may get most of their human contact during routine – and often impersonal – treatment from doctors and nurses. While these professionals help with the child's physical pain, there is usually little time to deal with the emotional pain of isolation, confusion, and homesickness.

Sending Get Well Soon Cards to hospitalized children is a wonderful way to help cheer them. This contact, and message of caring, can be the highlight of a hospitalized child's day.

Empire of the Sun

During this movie the main character Jim changed a lot before, during and after the war. As you watch the movie you can see him grow from helpless young boy to a mature gentlemen.

Before the war James lived with his English parents in China. He was kind of bratty and abuses his nanny. Even though James could be a little snotty sometimes he was thoughtful about the homeless guy that begged for change and food outside his gate. In the beginning you could tell he was rich because of the mansion he lived in and the clothes and school he went to. James changes a lot during the war he even changes his name.

During the war Jim lost his parents along with them he loses money, clothes and food. Shortly after he met Basie, who taught him somewhat how to survive. After meeting Basie he became a thief stealing food and other valuable goods for Basie to trade. He is also naïve to the fact that Basie is just using him. At the very end of the war Jim finds himself, he throws all his memories away and decides he’s not American, he’s not Chinese, or he’s not Japan, he’s just Jim.

After the war Jamie is united with his parents. Being back with his parents I guess he possessed all his riches again. After going from being rich to poor within days I think Jamie has learned the value a family and how it feels not to have parents. After the war I think Jamie was very mature and he is a survivor.

In conclusion James has grown a lot since before the war and he has even grow into different personalities like his different names Jim, Jamie and James all these names have a different personality in the movie.

Genetic Mutation

What is a Genetic Mutation?

A gene mutation is a permanent change in the DNA sequence that makes up a gene. The genetic mutation I chose to research is Breast Cancer. Cancer results when cells accumulate genetic errors and multiply without control. Today, most inherited cases of breast cancer have been associated with two genes: BRCA1, which stands for BReast CAncer gene one, and BRCA2, or BReast CAncer gene two. The function of these genes is to keep breast cells growing normally and to prevent any cancer cell growth. But when these genes contain abnormalities, or mutations, they are associated with an increased breast cancer risk. Abnormal BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes may account for up to 10% of all breast cancers. Women diagnosed with breast cancer who have an abnormal BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene often have a family history of breast cancer, ovarian cancer, or both. But it's also important to remember that most women with breast cancer have no family history of the disease. Identifying BRCA1 and BRCA2 has led to new techniques for lowering, detecting, and treating breast cancer, and lowering the risk for the disease. For women who wish to be tested, we can now establish whether the two genes are normal or not.

News Article

Bigger Thomas is doomed, trapped in a downward spiral that will lead to arrest, prison, or death, driven by despair, frustration, poverty, and incomprehension. As a young black man in the Chicago of the '30s, he has no way out of the walls of poverty and racism that surround him, and after he murders a young white woman in a moment of panic, these walls begin to close in. There is no help for him--not from his hapless family; not from liberal do-gooders or from his well-meaning yet naive friend Jan; certainly not from the police, prosecutors, or judges. Bigger is debased, aggressive, dangerous, and a violent criminal. As such, he has no claim upon our compassion or sympathy.

Bloom's Taxonomy ?- Evaluation

6. How would you feel if a friend pressured you into robery...?

If a friend tried pressuring me into robbing someone, I probably wouldn't fall for it. I am a strong a person and I don't usually do what other people say. I do what I want, when I want, no hesitation. While a friend was pressuring me, I would feel betrayed. Betrayed because after I said no then that should be the end of the story. My real friend would understand that and not want to push me into anything I wouldn't want to do. I would also feel set up because what if we get caught? That's like my friend is telling me to do wrong, telling me to get locked up.Your real friends want the best for you and they want you to succeed in life. It doesn't matter if they have nothing ahead of you then they wouldn't drag you down with them. I would reevaluate who were my friends and how much I mean to them.Obviously, Gus wasn't Bigger's great friend if he was so mad when Bigger wouldn't take the fall with him. Yes, a friends suppposed to back you up in what you do but not when it would mess up both of your futures. Bigger and Gus would be just another statistic.

Bloom's Taxonomy ?- Synthesis

5. Can you see a possible solution in bigger's lifestyle..?
So far Bigger Thomas has a troubled life. He lives in a small apartment with a couple of family members. There is clearly not enough room for a growing teenage boy. His neighborhood is trashy, filled with polution and his neighbor's aren't quite what you would call classy. He is surrounded by drugs, violence and most people who don't have father's.A possible solution to Bigger's lifestyle would him to strive to achieve over the possibility's of his neighborhood and to create his own standards. He would have to believe in himself. He could get his education and plan to succeed in the future. Bigger wouldn't have to rob someone to get what he wanted. Bigger is resting on the expectations given to him from the soceity as a poor African American boy. The odds aren't for him to go to any further than the streets by soceity. If he went above and beyond he could pass school and get a job. Since he would be the oddball out it would be easy for him to get scholarships.Bigger's lifestyle could be shot down if he falls into the traps of his peer pressuring 'friends'. He is the man of his household and needs to get a job to support his family. He should be a good role model, finish school and get a good job. It's not easy, but neither is life, you have to just deal with the bad and not let it drag you down.

4. What troubles might you have as an African American boy in the 1930's?

Bloom's Taxonomy ?'s -Application

 3. Could this story have happened in 2008..?

I don't believe this story would've happened in this period of time, because a lot of things have changed since the 1930's.  For instance: People don't get paid $20 a week.  Nowadays people can make more than $20 a day.

Bloom's Taxonomy ?'s -Comprehension

2.      What differences exist the death of Mary Dalton, and Bessie...?

I believe there is a big difference between the death of Mary and Bessie. When Bigger killed Mary it was an accident, because he was trying to get her to be quiet by putting a pillow over her. In result to that, Mary smothered to death. When bigger killed Bessie, it was intentional. He waited until she went to sleep and then decided to beat her to death with a brick.

Bloom's Taxonomy ?'s -Knowledge

  1.  Can you tell why Bigger told Buddy to place the box over the hole?

Bigger told buddy to put the wooden box in front of the hole so when the rat tried to run, he wouldn't escape and get away.

SERVICE LEARNING

My opinion on service learning is that we should continue on our old projects from last year. The reason why we should continue from last year is because if we keep changing the projects, than it will never get completed. The groups should be doubled into six groups because my opinion is that with fewer groups it will be less complicated. Also if the mural project doesn't go well because the owner for the building doesn't approve of the mural to be built on the building wall we should change that plan right now because it is a 50/50 chance that we won't be able to do that project. Also if they keep changing the project, what will we, as the class of 2010 have tol show?

AFTER NHD

I really can't compare NHD last year to this year because I didn't complete a project last year. Working on NHD this year was a little hectic. i worked in a group five other people and it didn't come easy. In the begining everything was going as planned, until people stopped taking care of their responsibilities. When it came to the end of the project there was only three other people from my group and myself working. This is truly a lesson learned, only work ith people that you know is going to pull through and help out.

My NHD Project

For my NHD project I decided to research and study the LA riots.  I chose this topic because i wanted to learned more about it. I am working on this project with Candance, Natina, and Shakeelah.  So far we have a lot of research and a lot of different sources. Here are some of the sources that we are using:
